Factors that create the quality standard of Solar Lights
Currently, there are many solar energy lighting products on the market, diverse in types, brands, and prices. However, many products lack clear origins and specifications, making it easy for customers to choose low-quality items. So, what factors should customers consider when selecting solar energy lights?
With a preference for budget-friendly options, many customers often face the dilemma of “losing money and getting no results.” Solar energy lights that do not guarantee quality will experience a decrease in performance after a short period of use, with LED chips prone to damage, unstable light, battery deterioration, and high time and cost for repairs and component replacements. Therefore, to use solar energy lights with peace of mind and without worrying too much about long-term efficiency, customers need to thoroughly research the product and the technical specifications of its crucial components.
LED chip
- LED chips often come from reputable brands such as Lumileds (Philips) from the Netherlands, Osram from Germany, Nichia from Japan, Bridgelux, and Cree from the United States…
- LED Chip efficiency: >= 170lm/W
- LED Chip lifespan: about 50.000 hours (many brands claim up to 100.000 hours, but this is theoretical lifespan)
- Each LED Chip has its own light distribution (bat wing)
Many customers often confuse the wattage of the light with its brightness. The wattage indicates energy consumption, while brightness is measured in lumens. A light with higher lumen specifications will provide better brightness, so the efficiency of the LED chip will significantly affect the light’s brightness. These specifications are factors that customers should pay attention to when choosing solar energy lights.
Storage battery
Solar energy lights from global brands use various types of storage batteries. However, Lithium LiFePo4 batteries are currently the most efficient and high-quality choice.
- The storage battery capacity is often 14 times larger than the light’s wattage, ensuring continuous illumination for 3 days in case of prolonged rainy and cloudy weather. Many customer projects may configure higher storage battery capacity to extend lighting time
- Up to 2,000 deep discharge cycles, safe and non-explosive
- Lifespan of about 5-8 years
The storage battery is a crucial component responsible for storing solar energy converted from the solar panel during the day to supply the light at night. Therefore, customers should choose Lithium LiFePo4 batteries with large capacities to store energy for a longer time and ensure durability.
Solar panel
- The solar panel type used is often mono or poly
- Cell efficiency 20%, panel efficiency minimum of 17%
- Panel wattage will be 2-3 times higher than the light’s wattage to ensure efficient energy absorption and quick charging for the storage battery.
Solar energy light manufacturers still prioritize mono-type panels (single-crystal silicon) for optimal efficiency even in areas with weak sunlight radiation. The panel wattage being higher than the light’s wattage is also a factor that customers need to carefully consider before deciding on a suitable light.
Controller
Solar energy lights must have an intelligent controller to optimize lighting time, monitor the charge/discharge level of the storage battery, extend the lifespan, protect against overloading, accelerate the charging process, and optimize the solar panel’s efficiency.
Additionally, they can easily connect to IoT management and monitoring systems, allowing remote control from anywhere and receiving automatic error alerts for timely handling, maintaining stable operation for the entire solar energy light system.
Motion sensor
Currently, new solar energy light products have integrated Microwave sensor technology, gradually replacing the old PIR sensor technology. This helps recognize motion faster and instantly adjusts the light mode when there is movement within the light’s coverage area.
Other mandatory factors include products with CE, RoHS, IEC certifications, complete CO and CQ certificates, LED chip test reports, and applying genuine warranty policies in Vietnam.
To facilitate customer evaluation/comparison and selection of quality products, DAT Solar introduces the NOVA solar energy light with a capacity of 40W from Sokoyo – one of the world’s leading brands in solar energy lights.
The NOVA light is an All-in-One type, integrating all LED light components, solar energy panel, storage battery, and controller into a unified system. It has a modern and elegant design, CE, RoHS, IEC, ISO, CB certifications, ensuring safety and reliability.
- The NOVA light uses Lumileds 3030 LED chips, a Philips brand from the Netherlands, with LED chip efficiency up to 170lm/W. LED lifespan is over 50,000 hours (equivalent to 12-15 years).
- Lithium LiFePo4 storage battery with a capacity of 576Wh. The storage battery capacity is over 14.4 times the light’s wattage, extending the lighting time. The storage battery lifespan is up to 8 years.
- Mono-type solar panel 18V/95W, the panel wattage is 2.4 times the light’s wattage, shortening the charging time for the storage battery. Durability is over 25 years.
