Energy storage solution (ESS) for industrial and commercial sector
ESS is an energy storage system using large-capacity battery storage for businesses and power plants. It maximizes the use of solar energy by storing electricity during off-peak hours and releasing it during peak hours, resulting in monthly electricity cost savings.
1. High demand for energy storage
The development of renewable energy, especially solar power, remains an effective solution to ensure energy security, replacing depleting fossil fuels.
However, the explosive growth of solar power has led to an oversupply during midday due to low demand and optimal solar radiation. Meanwhile, peak electricity demand occurs in the late afternoon when sunlight is no longer available. Therefore, energy storage solutions are crucial to increase investment efficiency, utilize solar power to the fullest, avoid energy waste, and reduce the load on the national grid.
Global energy storage market analysis indicates rapid growth, with a significant increase in demand for lithium-ion batteries. Data reveals that in 2019, the global market demand for lithium-ion batteries for base station communication was 12.1 GWh, and it is expected to reach 60 GWh by 2025.
2. Battery energy storage system (BESS) solution
BESS solution is a large-capacity battery energy storage system for businesses and power plants. It maximizes the use of solar energy by storing electricity during normal hours and releasing it during peak hours, saving on electricity costs. The system provides power even during grid failures and can be used in areas with weak electricity, intermittent power, or remote areas without a power grid.
When combined with solar power, BESS system stores excess solar electricity for later use, increasing self-consumption and reducing electricity purchased from the grid or not feeding power back to the grid as per EVN’s requirements.
If not combined with solar power, BESS system can store electricity from the grid during low electricity prices and release it during high electricity price hours (store when prices are low, release when prices are high) to save on electricity costs. Additionally, the system serves as a backup power source during power outages.
3. Main solutions of BESS
3.1 AC coupling solution
AC Coupling solution is used for projects that already have a Solar system (or other energy sources like wind power, generators…) with a large output capacity. The Solar and BESS systems are interconnected on the AC side. The BESS system is independent of the Solar system, making it easy to expand either the BESS or Solar if needed in the future.
3.2 DC coupling solution
DC Coupling solution is used for new installations or products with support. The Solar and BESS systems are connected on the DC side. The Solar and BESS systems share a Power Conversion System (PCS), suitable for projects requiring a high DC/AC ratio.
4. Application of various solutions
4.1 Self-Consumption of renewable energy
- It is an economic model where the system uses PV for its own electricity needs, acting as both a producer and consumer.
- During the day, when the PV output exceeds the load, resulting in excess electricity, the BESS charges the storage battery. If there is surplus PV energy, it can be fed into the grid or limit PV.
- At night or during cloudy weather, when the solar output is less than the load, leading to insufficient supply for consumption, the BESS provides energy to the load. When the State of Charge (SOC) reaches a lower limit, the grid supplies energy to the load.
- Consumption brings or will bring significant economic benefits and better control over energy bills, allowing for independent solar energy consumption.
- Self-Consumption promises greater independence from the power grid and variations in electricity prices in the future.
4.2 Peak Load Shifting
- It is the process of reducing power demand during peak hours, known as “peak shaving” or “smoothing peaks.” The purpose is to minimize the power generation requirements by adjusting the load flow. If the loads themselves cannot be adjusted, this must be done by deploying Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) to modify load characteristics.
- When grid power is less than the valley value, BESS is charged while the electrical system is supplying minimal energy to the load and electricity prices are low, typically at night. When grid power exceeds the peak value, BESS will discharge to provide additional energy during peak load times, simultaneously when electricity prices are high.
- This technique helps flatten the consumer load curve, reduce variability, pressure on the power grid, maintain usage levels below required limits, contributing to energy security, saving electricity costs, achieving good system management, and operation efficiency.
4.3 Micro-grid
- A micro-grid is a closed power grid that utilizes renewable energy, energy storage through batteries, and power generators to produce electricity. Micro-grids can either supplement the national power grid or operate independently, providing communities with access to a more sustainable and flexible energy supply.
- With the latest technological advancements, such as 5G connectivity, IoT systems, and AI, we can connect, monitor, and manage renewable sources efficiently, ensuring that micro-grid infrastructure is effective, reliable, and sustainable.
- This operational solution supports running in parallel or independently of the grid, potentially incorporating solar power and generators for use in island districts or areas without an electricity grid.
4.4 Off-Grid
- This situation occurs when homes, warehouses, garages, offices, and buildings are either not connected or temporarily disconnected from the power grid. In such cases, you can rely only on the energy generated from your household solar power or BESS energy storage system.
- BESS stores excess solar energy during the day for use at night, during low radiation or cloudy weather, or when the grid faces disruptions. Additionally, BESS can be used in conjunction with power generators and solar energy systems for off-grid applications.
4.5 Back-up
- Backup application is suitable for systems with high requirements for energy security.
- It stores solar power in BESS to be used when the grid experiences failures, combined with power generators to maintain continuous operation for electrical devices. Since the backup power system relies less on the power grid, when power supply issues occur, devices continue to operate normally and steadily.
4.6 V2G & EV Charge Station
-
- Vehicle-to-Grid, or V2G, is a technology that allows energy to be supplied to the power grid from an electric vehicle’s (EV) battery. V2G technology supports bidirectional charging (charging and discharging), allowing the charging of the EV battery and extracting stored energy from the car’s battery back to the power grid.
- Currently, EV batteries serve as an energy storage form that helps save costs, as no additional investment in electrical system infrastructure is required. With V2G, we can use the battery capacity more efficiently than with regular smart charging.
- BESS plays a crucial role in significantly reducing electricity costs and operational expenses, upgrading the power grid. When combined with a solar system, it maximizes the utilization of renewable energy to supply electric vehicle charging stations. As the number of EVs increases, BESS systems have the potential to stabilize the power grid, avoiding overload pressure on the existing power grid.
