With a significant increase in global demand for energy storage, ITP Renewables, a Renewable Energy Consulting and Project Management company, has received a substantial grant of $1,290,000 from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to conduct research and evaluate the performance and reliability of various lithium storage batteries for Hybrid solar storage solutions.

The research aims to assess two crucial criteria: stable operational efficiency and the ability to maintain storage capacity over time. Participating in the program from 2016 to 2022 in three phases are well-known brands such as Pylontech US2000B, Tesla Powerwall, BYD, LG Chem RESU1…

In each phase, new storage batteries will be introduced, and older models will be eliminated if test results indicate faults. If older batteries pass without issues, they will continue to undergo testing in subsequent phases to ensure fairness.

Test results:

Phase 1 from 2016 to 2017: The only stable battery from Phase 1 to Phase 3 is SONY, achieving an 81% State of Health (SOH) after 3680 cycles.

Phase 2 from 2017 to 2019: Involving Pylontech, LG, GNB, Tesla & BYD.

• Pylontech US2000B: Operated without errors, achieving a 77% SOH after 2830 cycles.
• LG Chem RESU HV: Experienced operational failure due to excessively low voltage and battery swelling in September 2018. After replacement, continued testing resulted in a 75% SOH after 2040 cycles.
• Tesla Wall Power 2: Encountered operational cessation due to unchargeable batteries, requiring a software update for continued functionality. Achieved a 79% SOH after 2520 cycles.
• BYD B-Box LVS: Battery failure occurred in 2020 with issues related to the Battery Management System (BMS).

Phase 3 from 2020 to 2022: With advancements and updates in modern technology, most tested battery models performed well until the conclusion of the testing process, except for SolaX and Sonnen, which encountered issues.

• BYD B-Box HVM: Experienced startup failure, achieving 94% State of Health (SOH) after over 1000 cycles.
• SolaX Triple Power: Encountered a battery module error in July 2021. Achieved 98% SOH after 600 cycles.
• DCS PV 10.0: Battery functioned well, but SOH declined rapidly, reaching only about 57% after more than 1000 cycles.

Common issues during real-world testing

– Operational faults: Batteries shutting down abruptly or experiencing unexpected storage capacity reductions.

– Lack of manufacturer support for technical issues.

Overall assessment after ITP Renewables’ research

Considering the best-performing storage batteries, the following models demonstrated outstanding performance. Sony and Pylontech lithium storage batteries showcased the ability to maintain stable capacity compared to other brands, with the declared capacity showing no significant reduction over time. Other battery models studied in Phases 2 and 3 also exhibited good capacity retention but with less stability over multiple charge-discharge cycles compared to these two models.
